Research Security Training Requirements

Required Research Security Training for NIH/NSF/DoD/DoE

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Defense (DoD), and Department of Energy (DoE) have updated training requirements for research security and disclosure of other support.

A new training module in the CITI platform for principal investigators will satisfy these requirements, which are summarized below. This module should be completed by PIs, co-PIs, and senior/key personnel with awards from NIH and/or NSF, or those who will apply for funding from these agencies.

Documented training must be completed before any proposal submission. Completing training early will avoid unnecessary delays and missing submission deadlines.

The personnel category is the same for all sponsors: Senior and Key Personnel on an R&D proposal, including consultants. DOE requires CITI Research Security Training (1 hour), completed within one year prior to proposal submission. NSF requires CITI Research Security Training (1 hour), completed within one year prior to proposal submission. NIH requires CITI Research Security Training (1 hour) and Other Support Training (5 minutes), completed at the Just-in-Time stage.

Export Control Training Requirements

Training is required to relevant personnel that may come into contact with export controlled information, that may need to work under a Technology Control Plan or with other controlled information, or as requested.
