Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
San Diego State University is dedicated to balancing scientific progress with compassionate and humane animal care, ensuring that research is conducted with the utmost respect for animal welfare in alignment with ethical principles. Our federally assured program adheres to the highest standards of animal care and use, as outlined by the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service (PHS) Policy, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
All research involving live vertebrate animals undergoes thorough review by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) in compliance with federal, state and institutional regulations.
Research Support Services, the IACUC and the Office of Laboratory Animal Care (OLAC) work together to assist investigators with animal protocol submissions, offer vivarium training and promote best practices in animal research.
How to Submit an Animal Use Protocol
iRIS allows you to submit or amend your animal research protocols, access personnel training materials, review all correspondence and notifications exchanged with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), manage personnel associated with your protocol by adding, deleting, or changing their roles, and track the progress of your protocol submissions.

PHS Assurance #16-00430
The IACUC meets on the second Monday of every month, except in December.
The Office of Laboratory Animal Care OLAC recovers unsubsidized costs associated with the procurement, care and support of animals used in research at SDSU through per diem housing charges and fees for services and equipment use. OLAC’s goal is to provide excellent laboratory animal care while keeping our per diem prices as low as possible for the research laboratories we support.Need Laboratory Animal Care Support?
