What you need to know when you travel abroad for SDSU/SDSURF

  • Travel that requires review

    • Travel with SDSU/SDSURF owned items/equipment and/or export controlled or sensitive/proprietary data

    • Travel to sanctioned or restricted countries (e.g. Belarus, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, the Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk Regions of Ukraine and Russia)

    • Travel to countries requiring specific documentation (e.g. China, Russia, Venezuela)

  • Travel to countries requiring specific documentation (e.g. China, Russia, Venezuela)

    • Do not travel with export-controlled research data without getting it reviewed by the export control office

    • Use "clean" or borrowed devices for high-risk destinations.

    • Encrypt all sensitive files.

    • Make sure your device’s security software is up to date

    • You may not take your device to a sanctioned country without an export license.

  • Traveling with other SDSU/SDSURF owned items/equipment

    • Hand carrying items/equipment abroad are exports and must be reviewed

    • Many potential exceptions can apply for items/equipment when it is temporarily exported

  • Traveling to China, Russia & Venezuela

    • All exports of university owned equipment must be reviewed

    • Laptops/devices will require filing with the US Census Bureau

    • Security precautions must be considered

      • Ensure your software security is up to date

      • Consider taking a clean laptop

  • Travel to sanctioned countries

    • All travel to a sanctioned country must be reviewed and approved by export control, including conference attendance (most will require licenses)

    • Any export of SDSU/SDSURF owned equipment, including laptops/devices will require a license, which can take months to obtain
