Biosafety Training

CITI Biosafety Courses

All training requirements must be completed before any individual may be listed on an approved IBC protocol and engage in any activities involving biohazardous materials or recombinant DNA (rDNA). Training must be completed every three years. SDSU uses the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) web-based courses to provide basic training in biosafety. Content is designed to meet NIH Guidelines, OSHA, and DOT requirements for basic training in biological safety.

If you have never used CITI before, you will need to create an account. Select San Diego State University as your organization affiliation. Or click here to log in via SDSUid credentials.

Note: The outline below will guide you in determining which CITI training modules must be completed, including the species type.

Below is a list of possible training scenarios based on the type of work you will be conducting

Question 7 within CITI contains all biosafety/biosecurity modules. This section is used to assign biosafety-related training based on the specific biological materials, laboratory procedures, and regulatory requirements associated with your research or teaching activities. Users should only select the modules that correspond to the activities they will actually perform in their laboratory, research, or teaching role, as these selections determine the biosafety training assigned through the CITI Program.

Required for all research personnel listed on the BUA. These courses cover a variety of biosafety and biosecurity topics that address multiple regulations, standards, and guidelines. They are intended to complement the hands-on training and experience that those handling biohazards obtain from their principal investigators, laboratory managers, and fellow researchers. Add the biosafety training course to your CITI profile.

Required for all research personnel working with human sourced materials, including but not limited to blood, body fluids, and human cell lines. Suggested for researchers who handle bodily fluids or other potentially infectious materials, and researchers who handle human blood or tissues. Add the bloodborne pathogens/human sourced material course course to your CITI profile

Required for all research personnel conducting experiments involving recombinant DNA, viral vectors, and creating transgenic animals. NIH Recombinant DNA Guidelines provides principal investigators and those responsible for the conduct of recombinant and synthetic nucleic acid research experiments with basic training and an overview of the requirements established by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Add the Recombinant DNA course course to your CITI profile

Required for all research personnel shipping or transporting biological materials off campus. Shipping and Transport of Regulated Biological Materials is designed as initial training and periodic retraining for employees who package or ship diagnostic and clinical human or animal specimens, human or animal pathogens, and other regulated biohazards. The course provides a basic understanding of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements. Add the Shipping and Transporting Biological Material course course to your CITI profile

Required for all research personnel working with Select Agents. Designed for researchers who handle or have access to select agents, who handle or have access to potential biowarfare agents or other potentially valuable biological materials, and those who handle or have access to potential biowarfare agents or other potentially valuable biological materials. Add the Select Agents, Biosecurity, and Bioterrorism course to your CITI profile

EH&S Occupational Health and Safety - Animal Biosafety Training

Additional Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S); Occupational Health and Safety; and/or Biosafety training may be required for research involving Animal BSL-1 or Animal BSL-2 (ABSL-1 or ABSL-2) work.
