Disclose an Invention or Creative Work

Inventors should disclose an invention to the TTO when an invention results from university research or use of institutional resources.

Please inform the TTO of an invention before any public disclosure related to the invention, as a public disclosure acts as a bar to patent rights in most countries.

The TTO generally requests 30 days in advance of a public disclosure to evaluate an invention and file patent application. However, please contact the TTO before any imminent public disclosure even if fewer than 30 days remain.

Instructions for how to use the Inventor Portal are available in our Guide to Completing an Intellectual Property Form (PDF).

Upcoming Due Dates

University Copyright and Patents Committee (UCPC) reviews potential disclosures monthly, usually on the first Tuesday of each month. Submissions for considerations at these meetings are due by the final Friday of the previous month but the earlier the better.
